About Us: School Nutrition

Good nutrition improves children's health, learning potential and school attendance and schools are vitally important settings through which to promote good nutrition and provide nutrition interventions.  Healthy nutrition contributes to decreasing the risks of today's leading health problems: Obesity, Cardiovascular Diseases, Cancer, and Eating Disorders.

Nutrition education has been shown to have a significant effect in fostering healthful eating habits. Thus, schools can contribute to reducing these nutrition-related problems by integrating nutrition interventions into a comprehensive approach to school health.

The Children and Youth Branch provides on going nutrition consultation to schools and school based health centers.  The Branch school nutrition consultant also maintains the North Carolina School Health Nutritionists Network (NCSHNN) External link. The overall mission of the NCSHNN is to build a statewide platform of partnership and collaboration among those who provide nutrition education as well as child health and nutrition services to North Carolina students, school staff, parents and other healthcare providers.
